			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span id="articleText"><span>European scientists have found a full range of markers in the blood of kidney transplant patients which could predict whether their new organ will be a success and whether they need large amounts of medication to help it.</span></span></p>
<p><span id="articleText">The researchers said on Tuesday the finding may help doctors to give more personalized care to transplant patients and to modify the amount of powerful immunosuppressant drugs they have to take to prevent their bodies from rejecting a new kidney.</p>
<p>The scientists, led by Maria Hernandez-Fuentes at King&#8217;s College London, studied various groups of kidney transplant patients in Europe, including 11 patients who had stopped taking their drugs after the transplant but did not reject the donor organ since they appeared to have a natural &#8220;tolerance&#8221; for it.</p>
<p>They carried out detailed tests of blood samples and found differences in the immune systems particular to these patients.</p>
<p>&#8220;We hope that now we can start to look at screening other patients to see if they also have similar markers in their blood,&#8221; said Rachel Hilton, a renal consultant at Guy&#8217;s Hospital in London and co-author of the study.</p>

So serious, in fact, that psychiatrists are now considering whether it should have its own entry in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders &#8212; the bible for assessing mental woes.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think it&#8217;s a very secret and hidden disorder, because these patients tend to be very ashamed of themselves,&#8221; Dr. Katharine Phillips, of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, told Reuters Health. &#8220;I have been so struck by the intense suffering that the patients experience.&#8221;</p>
<p>Phillips, who presented her findings Tuesday in New Orleans at the American Psychiatric Association annual meeting, said as many of two-thirds of her patients had thought about suicide. Many stay at home &#8212; repeatedly sniffing themselves, showering, and washing their clothes &#8212; because they are too ashamed to go out, thinking their mouth, armpits or genitals reek.</p>

<p>The four conditions of a healthy lifestyle were defined as obesity prevention, adequate exercise, not smoking and a balanced diet.</p>
<p>&#8220;The results of the investigation show that moderate alcohol consumption can play a part in a health lifestyle to help reduce the risk of developing diabetes type 2,&#8221; scientific research group TNO, which helped carry out the analysis, said in a statement.</p>
<p>Type 2 diabetes, which is often caused by obesity, is the most common form of the disease that occurs when blood sugar levels are abnormally high, and affects more than 180 million adults worldwide.</p>
